Part of the job of ambassadors - since the Northern Italian city states came up with the idea of permanent representatives - has always been to be the eyes and ears of the sending state, as much as its mouth. (1/3) theguardian.com/politics/2019/…
While @Jeremy_Hunt deserves credit for the necessary defence of Darroch, who has to be praised for doing his job in every respect - reporting frankly to his sending state, stepping down when the leaks of others made him ineffective, there’s something strange here (2/3)
@Jeremy_Hunt Namely the notion of “speaking truth to power”. An ambassador is part of the state’s machine. Traditionally, (s)he IS the power. It is noteworthy that an ambassador doing his job for a P5 power can now aptly be described as “speaking truth to power”. (3/3)

There’s a frightening lack of understanding of services trade. So let’s just have a quick look at legal services, shall we (thread)?
In an imaginary world of no barriers to trade, you could hire a Ukranian attorney (cheaper) and your Ukranian attorney would be able to compete openly against UK attorneys. Both barristers and solicitors, of course.
It doesn’t take long to figure out that that world is already fantasy because of the services provided. Much of the work in the UK is based on UK law and done in English. But let’s say our smart self-studied Ukranian is totally up to speed. But then...

@vonderleyen The European Parliament strengthened its position - using its powers under the treaties - by insisting on a Spitzenkandidat. However, this time around they didn’t find one who convinced even the EP. No majority for Weber, Timmermans or Vestager. 2/2
@vonderleyen If they couldn’t find someone that they could get behind, how can they now blame the Council for not getting behind “their” candidate (who?). I say that as someone who was very disappointed 3/2

The case agains vdL. Here are some things that case misses (thread)
1) The reality of a fractured EP (increasingly also a reality at national levels). Yes: vdL does not have the full support of all pro-EU forces. But to argue that she should be dropped because of it raises the question: is there anyone who does and is available?
It is all nice to argue from a dreamy idealistic point of view, but to reject reality on the hope that “oh someone will emerge” is fantasy land.

When Shiro was sixteen he found out that the church that his family had joined almost a year prior had a summer camp for the youth. Due to the fact that the church itself was fairly large and had multiple congregations scattered around the country,
events like these camps were organized geographically, with a dozen or more congregations banding together to put on these events for the youth; one specifically for the boys and one specifically for the girls.
