I know you woke up this morning wondering what 100,000 baby oysters looks like, and I am here to help. One cup is 500. We're putting our seed out later than usual because we suspect smaller oysters overwinter better.
We put them in bags, 500 per, and load the bags on the boat. Those of you who follow my farming threads have seen a zillion oyster farm pictures that all pretty much look the same, so I'll keep them to a minimum.
We take the boat out at low tide, clip the bags on to the trays, and leave the oysters to grow. That was yesterday. We'll do another 100,000 today, and then 200,000 more in a couple of weeks. Those 400K will be next year's oysters.

I am going to bend my no-ranting-on-weekends rule for this story on a PROBIOTIC for OBESITY because it is so very misleading. It's not a PROBIOTIC. It didn't significantly affect OBESITY. And there's more! nytimes.com/2019/07/01/wel…
There were 3 groups in the study (n=32): bacteria, placebo, and "pasteurized" bacteria. PASTEURIZED MEANS DEAD and it was the DEAD BACTERIA group that actually saw the piddly-ass benefits the study reported. nature.com/articles/s4159…
The actual PROBIOTIC didn't do much of anything. This, despite the fact that the study was FUNDED by the company that is selling it (LIVE!) as an obesity treatment. Yet this is the @nytimes headline:

The world is a poorer and slightly less argumentative place today. My Dad, Chuck Haspel, died over the weekend, peacefully, at home with my Mom. Since all that’s left is what we know of him, I want you all to know him. May I ask a daughter’s indulgence to introduce you?
I don’t have good pictures of my parents. We weren’t a picture-taking family and my Mom says every one of her and Dad should have the same caption: The Terrorist and the Imbecile. Dad was the terrorist. But I’ll share a couple of the least bad ones.
He was a deeply principled man who would nevertheless take any side in any argument, just to hash it out. If you’ve ever wondered how I got to be a world-class irritant, well, I come by it honestly. But I also learned that most disagreements have two reasonable sides.

Let me start by saying I am TOTALLY rooting for them. The Chesters are working their asses off trying to build soil and grow crops and raise animals at Apricot Lane Farms. I grow OYSTERS and am WILDLY in favor of expensive food for rich people.
They are growing DIVERSE fruit & veg crops, incorporating animals, making soil health a priority and I say BRAVO. The question here is what this tells us about larger questions of SUSTAINABILITY.

Woke up this morning and the 3 asshole squirrels were BACK ... to be honest, I was a little relieved at first to see them. Sure, they're annoying AF but I didn't want them to have been killed when my neighbor took down all their trees.

But then I remembered they're assholes.
And those assholes were sitting on TOP OF ALL THREE FEEDERS - one on each. Now, I know I tend to be a tad dramatic about these furry little bastards but I swear the biggest asshole squirrel grinned when he saw me peering out from my patio.

He may have flipped me off.

Not sure.
I calmly walked back into the kitchen and grabbed my handy dandy PAM, in 'butter' flavor because my birdies seem to prefer it. As soon as I opened the door from the patio two squirrels dropped and ran up the trees, the third dropped and ran head first into our new fence.

BAM.

One of my favorite Chinese idioms is 脫褲子放屁 ( literally "taking your pants off to fart"). It's a way to describe things that are stupid and unnecessarily complicated, like the thing I'm thinking about right now: Our insanely stupid health care system.
You see, I just paid a bill for an appendectomy I had IN JANUARY OF 2017, and I'm pissed on a number of levels -- which, with your indulgence, I will lay out here.
