Dr. Veena Shatrugna, retd Deputy Director,National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) says "Elite vegetarian food practices include liberal amounts of pulse, milk proteins from paneer, curd, tea, milk etc. nuts, fruits, berries and vegetables, (1)
These are rich sources of good quality proteins and vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, flavonoids, lycopene, etc. These nutrients are known to enhance immunity and by their action protect against a large number of chronic diseases, and even cancers. (2)
It is important to remind ourselves that milk proteins are animal proteins consumed in liberal amounts by this class of vegetarians". Vegetarianism proposed for the poor (see RDA for Indians 1986-2011) primarily cereal calorie focused, with minimal amount of pulse (40gm) (3)
& milk (150ml for 2 cups of tea),& no other animal protein like meat, egg, fish, beef, small animals, fowl, etc.. Even fruits &nuts are absent in the RDA. The poor cannot afford to buy even this amt. of pulse& milk because of low wages. MfC Bulletin, March - June 2013 (3)
