NEW: The US will end asylum protections for Central Americans and others who cross through Mexico to reach the border, the Trump admin announced Monday, a sweeping move that will be challenged in court.

The DHS official continued:
“There's a reason people apply for asylum in the US — we have a robust asylum system. Other countries on the route to the southern border don't.”

Another DHS official had this to say:

It's worth considering that the administration waited to publish this policy and to begin its ICE operation until after it received billions from congress in supplemental border funding.

Something to keep in mind about this new policy:
Migrants who come to the border and seek asylum won't be turned away. They will still receive an initial screening (which the admin is trying to speed up) and will have the ability to apply for protection through other methods.

Those non-asylum protections are tougher to get but they still remain. Also, the migrant can appeal decisions in front of an immigration judge.
All of this to say, as one former DHS official pointed out --- this won't do anything to fix the resource issue at the border.
