My mother hated bigots. She would not -- she did not abide that at all. The word "hate" is not exactly the thing for a Quaker woman as she was but it is the nearest. She hated them.
And the Quakers learn, you know, not only sympathy for the outcast as the Christian thing but the Quaker him or herself is often the outcast. So you don't forget that.
Only the Indians can tell anybody to go back to anywhere, of course, but California in particular is a place where people are drawn -- to get rich, to be in the movies, work in the fields, because they have nowhere else to go. So no, I don't agree with that at all.
President Nixon's use of the word "Indians" is due to his current personal experience of many native people calling themselves such. He understands that some do not. - RZ
"Chief" Newman, my football coach at Whittier College, was a Luiseño Indian. He was the finest man I ever knew other than my father. He should have been a coach at one of the big schools, but of course they wouldn't allow that. I never forgot it.
