Two op-eds in LAT argue that California should adopt New York’s right-to-shelter model for homelessness. NY has much fewer unsheltered people than CA. But this doesn’t mean it’s addressing root causes. @GavinNewsom often says: “Shelter solves sleep. Housing solves homelessness.”

A California right-to-shelter could cost multiple billions a year based on the NYC cost. So question is if that money is best spent on shelters or actual housing. Also because @Mayor_Steinberg, a Newsom adviser, is proposing it this is a real trial balloon sacbee.com/news/local/hom…

TODAY: State lawmakers will hear for the first time #SB50, the bill that allows four- to five-story apartments near transit and more. Unlike last year’s version of the legislation authored by Sen. @Scott_Wiener, SB 50 should advance out of its first committee. Here’s why: (1/6)
@Scott_Wiener The first reason is pretty obvious. Senate leader @ToniAtkins created a new housing committee and put Wiener in charge of it. That’s where the bill will be heard today. It’s rare for a committee chair’s bill to get killed in their own committee. But there are more reasons. (2/6)
Unlike last year, SB 50 has the support of the state’s construction workers’ union and more robust support from environmental groups. And many who represent tenants — while still wary — have not taken a position while their immediate opposition helped crush the bill in 2018 (3/6)

The judge in Maryland hasn't weighed in yet on the legal team swap. Recall that the judge in SDNY rejected the withdrawal, saying DOJ failed to follow the court's rules (but giving them a chance to try again)
UPDATE: The judge handling census citizenship Q cases in California just had a brief telephonic status conference. Per a lawyer on the call, the judge ordered DOJ to re-do its motions to withdraw the previous legal team, saying DOJ needed to comply with local court rules

#REDFLAG: After a setback in the Supreme Court, Trump asks his lawyers if he can DELAY THE CENSUS

The census is constitutionally-mandated to begin in April 2020, under Article I, Section 2.

Trump is asking if he can IGNORE the Constitution b/c he doesn't like a SCOTUS decision.
#RELATED: The Supreme Court ruled against the Trump Administration's proposal to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census...for now.

It would've led to a severe undercount, which would've rigged elections and resources in favor of white Republicans.
#HUGEWIN: The Trump Administration will begin printing the 2020 Census WITHOUT the citizenship question.

After missing their deadline, some feared Trump may actually try to defy the Constitution and the law.

This is an incredible victory for democracy!

#CDPA or Consumer Directed Personal Assistance began in New York and was quickly copied across the country. It was designed by disabled people for disabled people to give us more control over or lives and the supports we used to live in the community. #CripTheVote
#CDPA makes disabled people the employer of the attendants who provide us services. It gives us control over hiring & firing as well as how and when it is provided. It lets us control who touches our bodies, who assists us with our most intimate needs and who doesn't #CripTheVote
