The generational millennial/GenX divide on how to pronounce “important” is our biggest fault line.

Anyway. At first I thought this was a regional or racial or other dialectical divide. But six years into this obsession, I think it’s generational. Like Valley speak of my youth or uptalking at end of sentences, which is mostly a female response to a sexist world.
there used to be a dialect in the Mission District known as “the Mish” and its closest relative was thought to be an old school Brooklyn accent. Dialects are awesome, and worth thinking about all the factors that give rise to and erase them.
