1/ Ricky Joyner was convicted of murder w/ questionable evidence & a controversial interrogation.

It’s 1 example of Elkhart, Indiana's troubled criminal justice system, which @SBTribune @ProPublica began investigating last yr.

2/ There were the arrests of Keith Cooper and Christopher Parish, two men wrongly convicted in an armed robbery in which a man was seriously wounded.

3/ There was the conviction overturned because a prosecutor failed to disclose “explosive” evidence that the state’s only eyewitness had been hypnotized prior to trial. propub.li/2O5jSnS

4/ Our investigation of the Elkhart PD also found:

—2 officers punched a handcuffed man in the face
—the chief downplayed the beating to an oversight board
—nearly every supervisor had a disciplinary record, including the chief, asst chief & patrol capt propub.li/2xSmHxB

5/ Since we began digging:

—the 2 officers were indicted on civil rights charges (they’ve pleaded not guilty; trial set for Sept.)
—the police chief was suspended, then resigned
—Elkhart’s mayor abandoned his re-election campaign
—the city approved $150K for a review of the PD
