Brexiters need to understand the huge difference between realism, and talking the UK down.

If you're a hobbyist runner, and I say "sorry, you're just not going to beat Usain Bolt" that's being honest. Doesn't mean I want you to fail. Reality itself dictates you won't succeed.
Now, I can give you all the optimistic pep talks in the world, pray, garland you with good luck charms, do a thousand other things... none of my efforts will make you run faster than Usain Bolt.

So you can carry on deluding yourself, and wasting everyone's time - or get real!

Break-Even Day... And what an magnificent day it was! The church bells rang out every hour, and we were given an extra ration of gruel at lunchtime. They even let us leave our spades in the fields, rather than carry them home with us.
That prophet of the early 21C, Jacob Rees-Mogg, was spot on almost to the day. With the inking of our trade treaty with Indonesia, we have finally surpassed what we lost on Brexit Day. Such remarkable foresight. It is just a shame the great man isn't here to see it.
However, footage of our celebration has been tight-beamed to the Platinum geriatric colony on Mars, so he will no doubt have opportunity to relish the occasion in due course.

Must finish here for now, dear diary. Tomorrow, it's potatoes, and they're not going to pick themselves.

An absolutely must read and bookmark thread about how differences between polling methodologies affect Labour's vote share in polls (and also the Greens and the BP). Lots of little things that can add up to big swings between polling firms.
It also suggests to me that the best way to treat polls is as a series of directional indicators on different graphs. So if YouGov are consistent, then the direction of travel *between successive YouGov polls* is instructive. Similarly for Ipsos Mori, ComRes etc.
What doesn't work is to treat them all as lines on the *same* graph.

Note that often the media - and politicians - do just that. But that's because the poll results suit their agenda (it doesn't even have to be a political one - "get more clicks and readers" is also an agenda).

Could Boris Johnson's endgame be to squeeze Parliament into such a corner that they force him to revoke Article 50 and stop Brexit as the only alternative to no deal?

If there's a gigantic showdown that he loses, he can then blame Parliament for Brexit failing & sail on as PM.
Remember: what does Boris Johnson want at any cost? To be PM.

What will he do to achieve that? Absolutely anything.

If it includes collapsing Brexit but that keeps him in power until 2022, he wouldn't even blink.
So it's a bit like the two battling newspaper columns he wrote...

Either he gets to no deal Brexit, which would make the Brexit Party redundant and bring ex BP voters back to the Tories...

Or Brexit is cancelled but it's not his fault.

Are you trying to solve racism/sexism/colonialism with your work?

As writers we love stories about heroic writers whose work has changed the world. And as such we like to look to our own writing to solve societal problems.
And I understand this completely, not the least because I’ve felt the pull.

But if you’re looking to play saviour with your words, it is unlikely that you will do the marginalised people you are trying to save justice.

I feel like driving up some controversy, so how about a thread of Hot Takes/Unpopular Opinions! You know the drill, one like = one take/opinion.

Start easy: the blunt awkwardness/cringe of 'Blurryface' is the point of taking the piss out of Tyler. I stand by my light 9/10.
2. I don't hate Nickelback's 'Dark Horse' - it's easily a record for them at their most tasteless, but the frat-bro swagger of it helps some of their better hooks.
3. 'Fireflies' by Owl City is a genuinely terrific song that captures precocious, starry-eyed wonderment better than few others in the 2000s.

It is SPECTACULARLY lame, but that's why it works.
