In a sign of the times, my mom (previously a teacher, deeply skeptical of entrepreneurship for family history reasons) started an Amazon FBA business as an alternative to a part-time job in retirement.
She has apparently watched 100+ hours of YouTube videos to prepare for this. “It’s much quicker than calling the Secretary is State and asking them how to file an assumed name application and YouTube is infinitely patient.” (Mom has hearing/etc challenges.)
Her problems so far have been convincing Amazon that she’s legit (imagine a low-computer-literacy user running into a KYC problem and expecting this to be resolved by explaining herself to a human) and getting a bank account for the business.
Apparently she had a tough time convincing a large US bank that opening a sole proprietorship to do an Amazon FBA business was a legitimate thing to do and this took a few works of arguing.

(The engineer and business owner in me note that there are ways for one to have data "at your fingertips" and still have the production of that data be ruinously expensive or disruptive, but pragmatically speaking, you can't sit at the adults' table and say Compliance Is Hard.)

It is not other people’s job, in most cases, to know consequential facts about you / your offering, and so if you want them to know and remember those things you will have to repeat them *much much more than is natural or comfortable.*
There are people who know me professionally who on meeting me for the first time express surprise I have ever been to Japan, where I have lived continuously for my entire 15 year career.

Someone will learn I work at Stripe from this tweet, I guarantee it.
I have had at least three meetings this year where half an hour in someone realized that they have been reading my blog, in some cases for years, without realizing that I also have a physical form that could strictly hypothetically be in a meeting with them.

I've been asked a number of times this trip how to cold start a community (in a place, a field, etc). There is no one answer, but if you want a reproducible pair of questions:

Who do you have in abundance?
What do you have which is scarce?

Introduce the two.

Repeat.
Note that you do not have to be / produce that which is scarce; the community gets 100% of the value from you connecting to it if it already exists if they were unaware of the existence, could not access it themselves, doesn't know they want it (but actually does), etc etc.
Experts are something which is often scarce and *very counterintuitively* experts often have a surfeit of opportunities to talk about the thing they devoted their career to in front of an engaged audience, so that's a repeatable offer you can make.

Adding to this: I think that building a personal brand around your product e.g. I do #advertising, so I am going to tweet about ads, makes more sense than making it all about me and being a 'celebrity' it's just not practical.
All of the beauty girls on Instagram are all posting about how they do they make up and then selling that makeup - makes sense right? So why would you post about anything else if it's not to promote your #income. Just my 2c on the matter :D

Yesterday, @haleshannon got trolled by a weakass MAGAbot raging at her for her privilege as a "rich NYT bestseller." I don't know how many authors have to explain this before people get it, but I guess it's my turn.
The truth: I would not be able to write if my husband wasn't the primary breadwinner of our family. The little trickle of personal income that I have is from my part time job as a bookseller. I work about 15-17 hours a week above minimum wage.
