People get angry that Mark Francois gets invited on to talk about things despite the fact that all he offers is ignorant bile. But it's worse than you think: He is invited on *because* he offers ignorant bile.
What possible other reason could there be? No-one knew who he was. Then he did an interview gibbering about fighting the Germans and tearing up the withdrawal agreement. Went viral. Then he was all over TV and radio.
The reality is that this is the kind of behaviour we are encouraging, as a political culture. Behaving in this way has done his career *good*. And now look at who is prime minister and ask yourself why.

I do think they should keep Thought for the Day. It does more to show the irrelevance of religion to the modern world than anything else I know.

I left the bedroom door open to keep it cool. Terrible mistake. The room is now full of these little midgicunt fly things stuck to the walls. Little bastards are everywhere.
Never seen this in this country before. It's like that weird feeling when an animal lands on you when you're travelling somewhere exotic and you thing: What in the manner of hell is this thing.
Bastards literally all over the walls. I tried negotiating aggressively with them by threatening to slap them with a copy of 2000AD. No success. I have now accepted defeat, closed the door, and resigned myself to sleeping in the living room tonight.

Edmund Burke (1729–97) referred to an 'economy of truth'. That was transmuted by Robert Armstrong (head of the British Civil Service) who spoke of being 'economical with the [valuable] truth'. The genius of our times has been to abandon that cumbersome & limiting truth standard.
We have made a surprisingly smooth transition to lies, the lie standard, & an economy of lies. The scarcity value of truth was fool's gold when compared with the wealth & abundance of lies. What a dark & starkly bleak world that now seems, brightened only by flashes of paradox.
How sad, constricting & wrong Epicurus' follower Lucretius had been: "The energy of intellect won out. The fiery battlements no longer stood as limit to his mind: it now ranged free in time & space, returning soon with trophies of his victory: what things could be or never be."

Over the last couple of years we've heard continuously from Brexiteers that one individual is the UK's leading trade expert - he has advised Ministers and happens to back no-deal Brexit. I think there should be more competition (niche thread) 1/
Many in the UK trade policy community think of Alan Winters as the lead expert - he's written extensively, advised pretty much everyone, and worked for Gov departments, World Bank etc.... 2/ sussex.ac.uk/profiles/97501

Notes on the 'women's rights vs trans rights' framing that's popped up recently, since I'm starting to see (I hope) well-meaning and non-bigoted feminist colleagues buying into it. In short, it's a ploy, and distracting attention from the very real threats to women's services. 1/
First, we should always be wary when we see 'competing rights' claims being made. Framing the debate this way is a longstanding tactic of the Christian Right. They learnt it from abortion, and it's been transposed to, among other things, the fight against gay marriage. 2/
It's why US anti-gay marriage activism now focuses on rights of religious freedom, small business owners etc - see @AndrewRLewis on this. It's also why anti-abortion activists in the UK have suddenly taken up the cause of e.g. disabled people and South Asian women's rights. 3/
