Those on the left commenting on his "halting performance" don't seem to have a problem with what he said.
That is someone being a careful witness, being accurate and not speaking outside the scope of the report.

Witnesses are not supposed to perform.
The Democrats would have done better to ask open-ended questions. Yes and no questions are what you do on cross examination with a hostile witness. It doesn't make a witness comfortable. And it meant he had to refer to the report to know what they were talking about.
And if he had responded to Republicans with fire and brimstone, the story would have been how clearly partisan he was.
The Democrats should have done better calculus here.
