Putting this out there again because my blood is boiling from hearing yet another story of how the organization failed a fantastic woman leader in uniform

Shit like this.

Unacceptable.
If you are a male military leader and you're not absolutely SHUTTING DOWN the inappropriate comments, remarks, etc that are the institutional norms that protect assholes who sexually harass and assault our women comrades-in-arms, you are WRONG. IDGAF if it makes you uncomfortable
These types of incidents are the gateway that create a culture where much worse things can happen. Changing the culture is the first step. Maybe it makes you unpopular - don't care. It's about keeping our trust with fellow servicemembers. It's about living our values.
Most of all, it's about never failing the people who swore the same oath we did - it's about having their back. It's the right thing to do as a human, and as a military member. We will continue to lose amazingly talented people if we keep breaking trust.

We must do better.

I've noticed more and more people hating on the concept of mission command around the Army. Which either means 1) we're not executing it to its fullest potential 2) some people just want to be directed to perform every single task and not have to think or take risks
I'm perfectly prepared to believe that option 1 is the norm, as I see it everywhere. You can't hand wave mission command, just like you can't hand wave sustainment -- even though we see it done constantly. All units need a shared understanding for the concept to even work.
Higher and lower need to have a common operating picture and clear commander's guidance. Too often, one of those is missing. Then when the unit executes disciplined initiative to exploit an enemy weakness, higher gets caught off balance as well & then gets pissed at the unit

Damn. This is so prescient on the relations between France & the US. One can still see the dissension even now, 243 years after this letter was written.

it was at exactly this time of the year 80 years ago, in 1939, when @JohnsHopkins made national news for an interesting reason: a white professor resigned over the administration's refusal to admit a Black student.

(warning: twitter pedantry to follow...)
the student was Edward Shakespear Lewis, 36 yrs old & head of the Urban League in Baltimore, a major figure in the struggle to secure rights & protections for Black people here during the Depression, especially in employment. he applied as a grad student in political economy
Lewis was also one of the organizers (along with Thurgood Marshall of the NAACP) of the largest anti-fascist demonstration to ever happen in Baltimore, when the Nazi cruiser Emden visited Fells Point to much civic fanfare in April 1936 (2nd pic is the protest)

Saturdays are the hardest when you’re single. Sometimes it takes until 5:30 to shower & get out.
