With the FG enforced ban on the forex for importation of Milk, I feel it's time for some of us to know about John D. Rockefeller (JDR). A thread
JDR was named America's wealthiest ever man and arguably the richest man ever in modern history with an estimated worth of $409bn (2018 figures adjusted for inflation) as at the time of his death.
JDR was the owner of Standard Oil, an oil company that ran a monopoly in the United States till 1911 before a landmark Supreme Court decision in Standard Oil Co. V The United States.
Some time as at 1880, Standard Oil was refining over 90% of the oil consumed in the United States and basically had no competitors as at that time. The monopoly enjoyed by Standard Oil was one of the reasons that pushed for the enactment of the Sherman Antitrust Act 1890.
Eventually the company had their day in Court when in 1911 the Supreme Court held that Standard Oil was running an anti trust monopoly and split the company into 34 parts.
The dissolution of Standard Oil into 34 parts birthed companies like Chevron, Exxonmobil, BP, Mobil and so on. It has been argued that if this never happened, JDR would have comfortably become the first ever 'Trillionaire' and others would never be able to compete.
Like Nigeria learnt nothing from what happened over 110 years ago, we have Aliko Dangote. Dangote is currently the Africa's richest man and curently enjoys similar monopoly like JDR.
A lot of the younger ones may never know of Elephant Cement and Ibeto Cement companies. The financial power and government support Dangote enjoyed effectively saw that these guys ran out of business.
Dangote like Rockefeller is currently building a refinery in Lagos. The refinery has the capacity of satisfying the entire domestic consumption of Nigeria as well as leaving enough for exportation. Unlike Rockefeller, Dangote would enjoy 100% monopoly on that front.
In a few years, Dangote would have the power of being able to determine how much PMS would be sold in this country as well as chasing away his competitors.
This monopoly SHOULD see Dangote enter the top 10 richest men in the World if Oil stays relevant by 2027 or earlier.
Then we have this issue of milk. Some of us may have read the headline below with a pinch of salt back in May 2019. The events of the past week should show that Dangote may have probably had advanced knowledge of this unfortunate policy of the CBN.
When Dangote commences full production, expect him like he did with cement to determine the price milk would be sold in this country as imported milk woul be too expensive for most of the people.
Dangote may yet again enjoy another monopoly in this sector as not a lot of us would be able to compete with him when he starts making sales.
Malnutrition would hit our ever vulnerable young ones of under 5 years and the government would probably give Dangote tax breaks to encourage more productivity in his company. People like Dangote would always find it easy in a dysfunctional Country like Nigeria.
