Now that post-Cold War liberal progress no longer appears as the universal solution to social conflict, the historical meaning of 1789-1914 has re-opened as an issue in public debate.
Up until the financial crisis, the social question and pre-Russian revolutions were almost completely off the historical agenda, but since then they have come roaring back.
Rather than just Cold War or the long 20th century, it seems like were are getting back into 1789-present as a category of analysis with the sections in between chapters in a longer history (albeit one that is far less eurocentric than it once was)
