This hits on one of the central problems in terms of academic engagement with the tech world. We aren't trying to produce a clear "actionable" agenda. A lot of our work is trying to get people to consider the complexity of cause and effect rather than strict progressive linearity
When people complain that no academics are working on a field, they often are actually saying that no one is providing a set narrative that provides us with a clear set of "lessons" from history that demonstrate the path forward.
Ironically, the main group of academics who used to follow this style of interpretation of history were the Marxists, but contrary to popular opinion, not many left in the academy.
