1/ Look at the replies to this, and some of the other stuff going around Twitter, including from bluecheck journalists who have never spent a minute reporting on this issue. Don't agree 100% with framing but clinicians in the US, in good standing w/WPATH, expressed the EXACT SAME
2/ concerns to me while using their full names. Anyone who reports on this issue with the critical eye that should be applied to ANY health/science controversy immediately gets punished for it professionally, has death threats made against them, is told by their fellow journos
3/ they are a bigot, etc. etc. If this turns into the trainwreck it might turn into, please keep in mind who was out here trying to prevent journalists from doing their jobs. Many of the culprits are themselves journalists -- that's what's completely astonishing.
4/ Keep in mind the absolute shitstorm the Times dealt with for an eminently fair article pointing out that binding has some risks.

Progressive journalism is absolutely SCREWED in this area. It is a disaster. Full-stop.

So many people in positions of relative power were unable to summon a sentence like "I dislike Ngo's work but physical assaults on journalists, and/or people filming in public, are never acceptable"! That's crazy -- it's the equivalent of being unable to clear a two-inch hurdle.
That said it's fine to say "police claim" the thing about the quick-drying cement but it smells like a potential rumor and people should be cautious about spreading that aspect of the story. All the bad stuff is on video anyway.
See? This isn't hard. A bunch of mouth-breathing Twitter tough-guys will yell at her but so what? There are actual progressive journalists, right now, refusing to condemn violence against another journalist because OH NO THE CHAPO GUPPIES. It's genuinely pathetic and disorts.

1/ Gender dysphoria is in the DSM-5. Despite endless rumor-mongering and misinformation to the contrary, it *is* considered a mental disorder. Maybe it shouldn't be! But it's beyond insane to suspend someone for expressing an opinion which lines up with the DSM. I have less and
2/ less faith that, as a journalist who often writes about science, I will be able to continue using Twitter without getting punished for communicating scientifiically accurate infromation. Twitter is making a terrible and embarrassing error here that it should fix.
3/ Anyway, this is part of a larger problem of a complete meltdown, in elite progressive spaces, of the ability to accurately convey science on stories having to do with social justice. Journalism, academia, social media -- same story everywhere. It's a slow-motion disaster.

Oh man I have so many thoughts about this piece. I just wish outlets would be more rigorous in trying to explain important-to-understand behaviors like violent threats. It's genuinely more complicated than wanting to "silence women of color."
2/ For one thing the dudes doing these threats obviously don't do violent threats to conservative women of any color. So in that sense it's clearly very much about partisanship. If you held everything constant would race and gender factor in? I bet. But it's more than IDs.
3/ Ah yes, as we all know male political figures have not been criticized for their tweets lately. Can't think of one example.

Again, I'm not saying the criticism is totally even! But if we wanna understand this stuff we can't over-essentialize it.

It was cold, freezing afternoon in New York the moment we walked out of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. But we had the warm feeling that we won.

Today’s ruling affirms it.

The President of the United States cannot block American citizens on Twitter.
People reply to Trump for many reasons. Some do it to suck up to him. Others to protest him. A few even just want to sell their own merchandise. It can get pretty chaotic sometimes but that’s the beauty of it too. It’s the one place on Twitter that isn’t a partisan echo chamber.
It’s free speech from a firehose. I reply to Trump because I believe in reasoned dialogue based on facts and evidence over soundbites and ideology. Whether my ideas are good or bad, I see feedback from both liberals and conservatives—the opposite of an echo chamber.

Twitter seems to be banning or suspending accounts belonging to critics of the Chinese government. It started yesterday May 31th. Here is one report - I noticed a sudden loss of followers yesterday, I checked, it was mainly China critics. Twitter❤️🇨🇳 Amazing! @mouse @1GigiSims
This is happening as an effort to silence #China critics ahead of the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, which is next Tuesday. Twitter is helping China do its dirty work to silence the legitimate opposition. Twitter has hit a new all time low! 👎👎👎
One other possibility that can't be discounted is that the #Chinese government is hacking into Twitter and is deleting the accounts of Chinese critics. I did hear reports in the past, that Chinese hackers were able to get into Twitter & do that.

Hi @Ryanair. We travelled on Ryanair flight FR3556 on the 3rd of February from Stansted to Marrakech. Our luggage was lost. We have heard NOTHING from you about where it went. We've filled in all your forms. Just giving you right of reply before we have some press go live.
We lost over £2k of clothes, medicine and cosmetics had our holiday ruined. We had to buy all our clothes for a 5 day trip. I had an asthmas attack due to my life-saving medicine being aboard and I had to be hospitalised. If i I died I would have haunted y'all.
At Marrakech we waited 2 hours for the luggage but it never appeared. We went to the Swissport/RAK lost property service who said 'it was probably lost or delayed/it should be on the next available flight. We were given the reference number RAKFR11389 and a ticket number D3V9GQ.

So. I’m back. But only because I have projects due that are impossible to complete without social media and there are articles and posts that I ~need~ to share because they’ve stacked at this point (which will go up later and be numbered).
Some housekeeping:

- Thank you to everyone (I mean that) who called, texted, or tracked me down. It’s a long story, but I sometimes get into a bad headspace where I assume I would be better off /gone/ & that no one would miss me. But it’s nice to learn that the opposite is true.
- I’m debating what a permanent deactivation would look like for me. Not sure how likely I am to go through with it, but it was nice to be able to block out the noise even for two days.
