Um, did I miss something? All but one of these are paid with tax money. I'm down for this conversation, but this is a strange comparison.
I wish we were having a real conversation about how to fund journalism. Blow and others act like we are paying for their labor. We aren't. We are paying for truth and integrity. It is those things that are in question, and it has nothing to do with whether he should be paid.
I'm fine paying for journalism. I cancelled my subscriptions to both NYT and WaPo. Because while they try to maintain integrity around journalistic practices, they do not have strong enough values around espousing rhetoric that causes harm.
I'm fine paying for truth and integrity. I'm not fine paying for whataboutism or both-sidesism. Modern news media has decided that they aren't a part of what's going on, they just document what's happening and collect checks. Nah. We're not going for that.

For the record, I believe a lot of the accusations that are coming out against Lambda School. I believe they have shown that they are not up to the challenge of supporting the people they profess to help.
Here's where I reached out to Austen asking about helping with Lambda school. This was before I started to see a lot of the bullshit and I was still impressed by the marketing and perception. I received no response.
I have been thinking a lot about tech education, and that has led me to investigate many schools and programs that claim to be providing alternative learning programs. Even when the people involved are genuine and have good intentions, the outcomes are a mess.

I agree that's part of it. But another factor that people really don't understand yet is that the level of attrition companies are experiencing is much higher than in previous decades. People are also losing their senior people at rates they are not prepared for.
The job market is changing faster than even the *analysis* of the job market can keep up with. And one big issue I see is that companies aren't able to make predictable plans for things like headcount.
I see a lot of other things that I believe contribute to the instability we see in a lot of tech companies though. I see a lot of companies failing to execute and not understanding why.

Reading the replies here, it's another data point on how people take a popular phrase and project whatever they want onto it. There are a dozen different definitions of "cancel culture" being argued here.
Not to mention the fact that the people who defined what call outs and call ins do not define it as a "culture" or a bandwagon to jump on. And it definitely doesn't include every type of toxic interaction that happens on the internet.
If I have a blindspot it's that I'm still asking who's lives are being "ruined"? Setting aside "cancel culture", I do believe an internet "pile-on" can feel devastating. But what are the long term effects? Why is there a growing assumption that people never recover? I'm confused.
