People have a favorable view of Medicare. They also have a favorable view of employer-provided health insurance and Medicaid. That's why it's so politically perilous to mess with the status quo in health care.

Keep in mind that 27.4 million people are uninsured, and there are signs that number is growing. That, along with affordability challenges for people with insurance, is what is driving the push to further reform health care.

While people have a favorable view of employer-based health insurance, they are certainly not happy about the fact that the average deductible is now $1,573 per person and has more than tripled over the last decade.

The Congressional Budget Office projects 32 million people will be uninsured in 2020, up 2 million from this year and 4.5 million more than in 2016.

CBO now projects that 7 million more people will be uninsured by 2021 due to repeal of the ACA's individual mandate penalty.
This is such an important and poorly understood result from the Congressional Budget Office: Federal subsidies for employer-based insurance for people under age 65 are projected to be higher than for Medicaid and much higher than for ACA premium subsidies.

There are a lot of health reform ideas being floated lately – Medicare-for-all and variations on the theme – that sound similar but are really quite different. Here’s an over-simplified cheat tweet.
Medicare-for-all: Everyone is in a public plan.
Optional Medicare-for-all: People can join a public plan or stay in employer coverage.
Public option: People with individual insurance can join a public plan.
Buy-in: Certain groups (e.g., age 50+) can join a public plan.
When looking at public plan or buy-in options that are not Medicare-for-all, I think the key questions are:

Who can join the public plan?
What do people have to pay?
What is covered?
How much do providers get paid?
How is it financed?

We don’t need to take away the private insurance of 180 million Americans in order to provide healthcare for all. Employer-provided health insurance covers the majority of Americans not on Medicare.

1. When people say that Americans don't trust their government, that doesn't make much sense to me. Most Americans I know put a glass under the faucet and drink it down without testing the water themselves to see if it's safe.
2. Most Americans I know drive 70 miles down the highway with the confidence that they won't suddenly hit an enormous hole in the road that will break their axle and send them hurtling off the road.
3. Most Americans I know put their seatbelt on when they get in the car (which almost no one did in 1970) because they trust the government that determined that wearing seatbelts is a good idea, and we've consented to that government's laws that encourage seatbelt use.
