My low-carbon virtual presentation today was to the EPA District 6 Stormwater Conference in Dallas! Here is how conference attendees described what they do to me.
... and here were their main concerns about how increasing temperatures, more frequent and more intense heavy rain, more powerful hurricanes and longer and stronger droughts will affect their work. (BMP=best management practices, incl control devices and systems)
Afterwards, the top question was: "how do you talk to people who don't agree with the science?" This Global Weirding episode has the answer!
The 2nd q was, "how can cities increase resiliency to climate change?" We can't rely only on past climate data for planning any more. We need to look ahead to build resilience to risks we can't avoid + increase resilience to risks that are increasing. nca2018.globalchange.gov
Q3 was, "what is one specific, attainable national policy we can support?" As a scientist, I know the planet doesn't care how we cut carbon: it only cares how much + how fast we do. But as a human, I know that this is one of the biggest barriers we face: rollingstone.com/politics/polit…
That's why policies like Canada's carbon tax and this proposed US bipartisan (yes you read that right, bipartisan) bill to price carbon are so important citizensclimatelobby.org/energy-innovat…
"How do we slow climate change?" was question 4, and the answer is - by reducing our emissions + drawing carbon out of the atmosphere. I encouraged everyone to check out @ProjectDrawdown for a list of 100 innovative ways to do this! drawdown.org/solutions-summ…
@ProjectDrawdown I was also asked, "what is the air speed of an unladen swallow?" but I will leave that one up to @JohnCleese 😂 and "would you be willing to speak to the City of Lubbock?" and the answer is, all it takes is one person to invite me! 😃
