THREAD: Moderators of The Donald subreddit -- which was quarantined in June for violating Reddit policy about issuing calls to violence -- participated in reviving & spreading on Twitter a troll campaign that appears to violate Twitter rules on election misinformation.
On Tuesday, a user posted a meme of Putin, with the hashtag "DemandVoterID." The meme & hashtag refer to a troll campaign from 2018 following the Trump-Putin Helsinki press conference (dailydot.com/layer8/demand-…). The post has been one of the top posts on the subreddit this week.
In response to the post, other users on the subreddit wrote that they posted the meme & hashtag on Twitter & were then penalized by the platform for “violating our rules against posting misleading information about voting.”
That violation refers to a rule Twitter imposed in April to, as reported by The Washington Post, “prevent deliberate attempts to misinform voters.” washingtonpost.com/technology/201…
Later, the official Twitter account for the subreddit -- which is run by the subreddit's moderators -- tweeted a similar Putin meme & the hashtag. The account said Twitter temporarily suspended the account due to it, & a moderator on the subreddit directly mentioned the tweet.
Since then, others on the subreddit have pushed the troll campaign, & use of the hashtag on Twitter has picked up dramatically. Some have posted similar memes as were on the subreddit, & some wrote that Twitter penalized them for violating its election misinformation rule.
(By "picked up dramatically," I mean that the hashtag wasn't being used that much recently until that July 30 subreddit post went up.)
This comes after the subreddit was quarantined in June by Reddit after multiple users on the subreddit issued calls for violence against law enforcement. Reddit afterwards specifically wrote to the moderators that it “expect[ed] you to enforce against rule-breaking content.”
The troll campaign continues to spread on Twitter. Here's the Putin meme and hashtag from that thread on The Donald subreddit being pushed by actor Adam Baldwin last night.
Gab is now also indirectly promoting the meme & campaign by linking to Gab accounts saying they got penalized by the platform for pushing it.
