The satirical website @TheBabylonBee has accused @snopes of targeting them out of liberal bias, and a number of conservative outlets are repeating this as a fact. thestranger.com/slog/2019/08/0…
So I talked to the founder of Snopes, who acknowledged that this post went beyond a fact-check, but he also explained why they fact check Babylon Bee stories more than, say, the Onion, and it's not a conspiracy.... snopes.com/fact-check/geo…
They fact check Babylon Bee stories more than Onion stories because more people ask about them. There's probably a few reasons for this, including brand recognition and the fact that satire isn't an much a part of conservative Christian culture as secular liberal culture.
I don't doubt that Snopes staffers probably lean left (most people in media do) but I don't think that's the big story here. The big story is what the hell are we going to do when so many people can't tell the difference between fact and fiction. thestranger.com/slog/2019/08/0…
One fun twist to this story: the guy who accused the Babylon Bee of driving a wedge between him and his dad has a history of publishing bullshit stories too.
