it is 100% reasonable to not reflexively trust the Journalism Ethics of people who softpeddle state murder and overt bigotry from elected public figures when they tell you it is imperative to memory-hole the names of racist mass killers while the bodies are still fucking warm
people want to have this both ways. and it is a dilemma since the copycat effect appears to be real, and MSM notoriety is clearly bad. but come the fuck on look who's POTUS and how internet subcultures work. do we really think that knee-jerk erasure is an answer, or just a salve?
I read these manifestos for a living. you want to know what I think the real thing people want to erase is? how generic and similar they all are - and how little daylight there really is at the end of the day between them and what gets published daily in many WSJ or NYT op-eds
also let's be real: part of the reason this has spread is b/c It Is A Thing People Can Do That Feels Like Doing Something. telling strangers online not to connect the obvious dots btwn lone wolf white supremacists? easy. telling your neighbor their stockpile of guns is gross? no.
seriously, who needs to read these pricks' Great Replacement manifestos when Bret Stephens tells you every few weeks about how We Americans don't speak Spanish and are worried about losing our country and way of life. FOH w/ the criminal minds social media forensics profiling BS
caring more about what the next mass shooter might think about your tweets than about how our social order consistently empowers, arms, and encourages white men to mass liquidate minorities is some next-level do-nothing pseudo-responsibility narcissistic garbage
they want to kill people. specific people. they want to get other people like them to kill more of those people. this is many things, but you know what it is not first and foremost? competition for attention. esp since by this point even these assholes know they're disposable too
maybe this could be otherwise. maybe. but that might also have to be after we get to the point when, say, protestors burning a garbage can or torching a flag is no longer hyped 24/7 by media. because note, BTW, how none of these copycat fears surface when it comes to that ...
