Scottish Independence Poll

52% would vote for Independence (exc dont know)

Support among the young is strongest & likely to rise with each group of new voters in that trend
Majority support up till approx age 50 in this sample
Pensioners still the group least likely to support
Scottish Independence Poll

Some Analysis: Solon (Commentator)

1. is absolutely blindingly obvious that if more people of 60 years and upwards where more engaged with directly and had some form of 'gauranteed confidence' in independence then yes support would be untouchable..
2. 59% support for remaining in the uk at 65+ is out of sync with younger people from 50 and below...it doesn't take a genius to work out worries about health, pensions and money will be a paramount factor for older voters...the Scot gov and parliament need to address that..
3. Why has The Scot Parliament not addressed some kind of citizens charter in the event of independence to give some legal standing to issues such as retirement pensions....eg in an independent Scotland continuation of such rights will be gauranteed in law ...
4. If legal statutes were passed in the Scottish parliament pre independence then they are law unless subsequently voted down?

Some older voters in the 59% who would not vote currently for independence may well be independence supporters but deterred by a fear for eg pensions?
5. Independence polling by age shows the younger you go below age 50 then the higher the percentage who will support independence...that figure for yes will likely go upwards gradually as each younger age group becomes one year older and new voters are added ...
6. It is much easier to be confident in change the younger you are and the healthier you are...it is also easier to generate income and opportunity which does not exist in older age...older age increases health issues and that is why older voters are more entrenched in 'uk trust'
7. The older age group who are currently no voters, (particularly above pension age) cannot all be 100% staunch uk union at all costs..there will be fluctuation in strength of that vote since it is out of sync with younger age groups...that needs to be addressed as a social issue
