An obviously insincere attempt to find favour with the PM.

If the UK wanted talks we would have put forward proposals. We didn't, and can't, because no Withdrawal Agreement can be pure enough for all Conservative MPs

If we genuinely wanted negotiations we'd have said, you know our issues, but let's talk. Instead saying we reject your red lines just says we don't want to talk.
This is what the EU 27 think. Whether or not you think they're right, it's what they think. They don't like being told it isn't what they think, or they're wrong to think it.

Important to know in Brexit debate (but elsewhere as well) that "Free Trade Agreement" is a marketing term and doesn't actually mean free trade. Rather it usually means preferential trade in terms of tariffs and other market access under a particular set of conditions.
All tariff preferences in "Free Trade Agreements" are conditional on rules of origin that mean you can't just rebadge someone else's goods and pass them off as your own. Negotiated badly this could mean no actual benefit for your exporters.
US and EU "Free Trade Agreements" have rather more stringent requirements in exchange for access to these huge markets - respect for intellectual property or acceptance of their rules on e.g. food.

Brexit negotiating approaches:

EU: The backstop is our red line. But we can discuss ways to make it acceptable to you

UK: Your red line is wrong, not required, and we're more important than Ireland. Oh and even if you remove it we still may not vote for an agreement
*awaits tweets from largely anonymous accounts saying that's just typical remainer stuff and you should believe in Britain, and it's annexation don't you know, undemocratic, and there will be riots on the streets...*

Or we could just learn how negotiations work

Just anecdata, but noticeable in the last week outside London that I've overheard nobody talking Brexit, first time this has been the case in a couple of years. Draw your own no deal / revoke etc conclusions...
Ano no, I don't think it's because enough people around the country now know I'll steal (borrow?) their Brexit chatter and claim it as my own...

👇 I briefed EU27 Ambassadors and EP today on the ongoing talks with #UK. Following the EU-UK statement of 20 Feb, the EU has proposed to the UK a legally binding interpretation of the #Brexit Withdrawal Agreement. Most importantly:
2/5 The arbitration panel can already, under Article 178 WA, give UK the right to a proportionate suspension of its obligations under the backstop, as a last resort, if EU breaches its best endeavours/good faith obligations to negotiate alternative solutions.
3/5 EU ready to give legal force to all commitments from January letter of @eucopresident and @JunckerEU through joint interpretative statement. europa.eu/!Kj44wR This will render best endeavour/good faith obligations even more actionable by an arbitration panel.

1/ Geoffrey Cox has scrapped a planned visit to Brussels today for further negotiations because the gulf between the EU & UK over what legal assurances will cut the mustard is so wide. So, what are both sides offering? The latest from me and @tnewtondunn 👇thesun.co.uk/news/brexit/85…
2/ First, the UK offer. The Attorney General tabled proposals for a new, independent arbitration system to rule on when the backstop could be ended. He said the question it should be asked is whether the UK had shown sufficient good faith in coming up with alternative solutions.
3/ If this arbiter said Britain's efforts on alternative arrangements and attempts to strike a trade deal with the EU had been good enough both sides would enter what Sabine Weyand dubbed the 'mini-backstop' - a stripped down backstop only addressing border infrastructure.

1/ Some thoughts about the new draft of the Brexit withdrawal agreement.

First of all, it's noxious that the Commission doesn't mark changes or (as before) explain the text in any way. A very partial approach to transparency.
2/ At first sight the main changes seem to concern the transitional (implementation) period, perhaps because the UK has focussed on that issue since it hopes to get this part of the text signed off shortly. Do let me know if you spot any other significant changes.
3 Here's the new "good faith" clause which the UK wanted. But I can't see what practical effect it has in the rest of the withdrawal agreement.
