Brexit negotiating approaches:

EU: The backstop is our red line. But we can discuss ways to make it acceptable to you

UK: Your red line is wrong, not required, and we're more important than Ireland. Oh and even if you remove it we still may not vote for an agreement
*awaits tweets from largely anonymous accounts saying that's just typical remainer stuff and you should believe in Britain, and it's annexation don't you know, undemocratic, and there will be riots on the streets...*

Forget the headline, focus on the substance of new trade barriers for UK exporters in no-deal Brexit. These are barriers, therefore costs, that none of their European competitors will face.

Free Trade Agreements reduce barriers / costs but do not eliminate them. Hence why replacing membership of a single market of 30 countries with a network of such agreements is overall trade restrictive
Ok, it isn't all about the trade as we know, but it is quite a sight to see self proclaimed pro-free market thinktanks argue for more trade restrictiveness in the case of the UK. The same of course happened with some in the US when Trump tore up Republican free trade policies

It is worth noting that the UK Government has still not said what it wants from a US trade deal (not good enough to just say 'free trade', especially when we have a lot of that already)
The unspoken reason a US trade deal is pushed so hard by so many in the Cabinet and around them is to push the UK away from EU regulations and towards US ones in areas like food. So this would be an anti-free-trade-with-EU deal. But that risks quite a lot of political controversy
Business, wary of the Atlanticist ideology, greater barriers to trade overall, and another controversial trade deal like TTIP, is not pushing for a comprehensive UK-US Free Trade Agreement, but rather for small deals easing some aspects of UK-US trade but not blocking UK-EU trade

Might show some domestic audiences that the UK is serious about Brexit. It shows every other country how fundamentally unserious this Government is to voluntarily not attend meetings which may be influential.

Unusual for an apparently loyal MP of your own party to hashtag #BritainDeservesBetter but unquestionably correct given the crass decision to withdraw from EU meetings early
I suspect the US won't be inviting us to attend any of their meetings where they determine security or economic policy #SpecialRelationship

Equally suspect civil servants with Brussels facing roles are deeply unimpressed with this empty posturing
