As part of an ongoing debate, discussion and occasional exasperation (on both sides) there is this concerning the place of guns in society as a function of protecting & even enabling "liberty".
A partial response of mine to that line of thinking.

What is clear is the issue of 'guns' is too large to actually discuss meaningfully. There are too many aspects to it, such that while thinking you are discussing a particular aspect your "opponent" maybe thinking of another. Thus hopelessly muddling the conversation.
For example, in the rural areas, the issues that concern the use of guns in the inner city are not applicable. In fact the solutions for the inner city are directly an attack on the proper & long time use of guns in those other areas.
But the discussion is had in absolute terms
thus creating instant paralysis.... We are unable to deal w the issue systemically, and thus are unable to deal w the issue at all.
Every 'good idea' for one facet of the argument/discussion is a 'bad idea' for another.
We seem, as a society, to be ever losing the ability to make necessary distinctions.
It is a problem, the problem, with simplistic Black & White thinking... all complexity is reduced to a single POV, thus ensuring tribal, not rational agreement or understanding.
