Hello, tonight’s dispatch from Kashmir Valley: situation on Day 3 much relaxed than Day 2. Restrictions relaxed by at least 50 percent. This is Srinagar at 7.45 pm
I have not watched TV whole day and don’t know what is being doled out. I spoke to a number of people today. I say this with absolute conviction: so many Kashmiris are happy that 370 is gone. But their belief is that the rampant corruption and privilege of a few won’t go
They urge that a handful of people with political power have benefitted so much from the ongoing conflict. Nepotism thrives, in all cases encouraged by the Indian State.
They wonder what makes the Indian State so weak and so oblivious of how a certain class has subverted the system and made money over the corpses of thousands of Kashmiris.
This is Srinagar’s iconic Zero Bridge at 7.55 pm. By 7, most (partial) barricades in Srinagar have been lifted. People are out buying groceries, medicines. I saw women on their evening walk. Stalls selling grilled meat at Dalgate, Rajbagh.
There have been odd incidents of stone pelting, mostly as security forces partially withdraw in the evening. But there have been no deaths. I repeat, no deaths.
At 6 pm this evening, fuel was available at some petrol pumps. We filled petrol in our car on the outskirts of Srinagar city. In the morning some vegetable sellers had put their produce on sale along the Buolevard road.
I can also confirm that the CRPF’s DG spent some time in downtown Srinagar, which has been the epicentre of violent clashes between protestors and security forces. This happened at around 10 am this morning.
Sorry, these tweets may seem random. But my internet window is very limited. Have spent whole day listening to stories of how Indian State has damaged itself in Kashmir in last 30 years. From Kashmiris who cannot say these things in open.
An important story will appear on @Openthemag at 9 am tomorrow. Please do read it if possible. So many thoughts, so many emotions. Kashmir really, really deserves peace. I have so many friends here. Here’s wishing a day comes when we all live together.
