I have spent since 4 am this morning revamping my Public Policy Analysis syllabus, with a number of considerations:

a) diversity and representation raulpacheco.org/2015/07/integr…
b) timeliness (including now policy termination and computational policy analysis
c) pragmatism
I have added new workshop activities, more practical and pragmatic, all the while teaching my students how to write analytically. This is a deeply revamped syllabus, which I will share as soon as it's finished (hopefully tonight because I am EXHAUSTED and classes start next week)
While we are on the syllabus discussion: ADD UNDER REPRESENTED MINORITIES TO YOUR SYLLABI.

I don't understand why this is hard to comprehend for people, but apparently it's a fight I need to engage every single time I discuss syllabus construction.

Micro-thread on "dealing with The Dreaded Blank Page". I have been wanting to write a thread and a blog post on this topic for a very long time. When one of my PhD students told me "Dr. Pacheco-Vega, I don't know how to START a paper", I literally froze. I was like "BUT WHY?"

Thread on literature reviews, mind mapping strategies, finding "the gap in the literature" and writing paragraphs in your literature review, after having reviewed all those 300 papers and 50 books. I am currently writing a revision of a paper on governing plastics. But...

I want to think out loud a little bit about a concept that has been stuck in my head for the past few months:

"Rationing by friction"

the (sometimes unintentional, sometimes malicious) phenomenon of restricting access to govt services by way of process & paperwork requirements
In a lot of ways, the ideas we talk about (user-centered design, service design, usability, feedback loops, instrumentation) are often taken as niceties, when in fact they are targeting a core problem:

every friction-laden step prevents some # of people from getting help
In the academic literature, this is referred to as "administrative burden" and the best background paper is this: batten.virginia.edu/sites/default/…

breaking down burden into 3 buckets (learning, psychological, and compliance)

Educational reform in Kaduna state in the last few days has generated the usual bickering that permeates the political divide. The conversations that my generation needs to have regarding education are many, but should be beyond the childish politicking that's pervasive so far
The dangers of politicizing our educational system is that 1) children suffer 2) our future is endangered 3) we keep losing our competitiveness as we fail to raise a new generation of thinkers with the skills & resources required to better their lives, add to nation's prosperity
