As the Steve King thing illustrated, there's a plank of the anti-abortion movement that wants to get rid of rape/incest provisions in part b/c they think it's a cleaner case for SCOTUS. But in many states, women who chose to have children after a rape are forced to share custody.
what's worse is that in order to keep sole custody they have to have a 1st degree rape conviction against attacker. That denies women who don't report, or whose assailants pled down, to petition for custody. Including UNSUPERVISED.
Can you imagine being forced to hand over your child to the man who raped you for a father-daughter weekend. It's outrageous.
And advocates say that rapists have been known to threaten women that if they do report, they'll petition for custody.
This is the lawyer, @RebeccaKiesslin, who's fighting to get states to reform their laws so rapists can't get custody. A child of rape herself, she also want abortion to be illegal in all circumstances.
