This is a truly bizarre take. The EU has never pretended that a hard border could be avoided if the U.K. chooses to remove Northern Ireland from the CU and/or SM, and those wonderful technologies have not yet been invented. And the Irish government has accepted this.
In July the Irish government accepted the obvious, namely that in a no deal scenario there will be tariffs between north and south, customs and SPS requirements and associated checks. See p. 6 here: dfa.ie/media/dfa/eu/b…
If the U.K. chooses a no deal Brexit, and there are the consequences that the Irish government itself accepts will inevitably follow, then how in God’s name is that a betrayal of Ireland by the EU? Desperate stuff.
No doubt there will be attempts to deflect the blame inside the UK by people friendly to Johnson et al. And maybe these attempts will succeed to some extent in the UK. Who knows. But people in Ireland & the rest of the EU weren’t born yesterday & will know exactly who is at fault
