As someone who also has a #sitti, I just wanted to confirm that sitti’s don’t mess around and there is a generation of Arab Americans who have #sittistories of their grandmothers from homeland that still leave them slightly in fear of judgment. @RashidaTlaib sitti is familiar.1/
Someone should collect these #sittistories. Mine had 9 kids and 28 grandkids so judgment was quick and generalized. 2/
My favorite was anytime an American woman left one of her Arab sons or grandsons, she would say “she went walking with women.” It wasn’t a suggestion of sexual preference. Sitti literally meant the deserter went walking with friends and not tending to relationship. 3/
It was as if the woman would have never thought of leaving one of her precious male kin but for the ideas other women put in her head while walking. Yes. A little dated on the whole gender equality thing. YOU tell Sitti that. 4/
It still makes me laugh. It’s said with certitude, not terribly nuanced, somewhat incomprehensible in its reasoning, but swift in judgment. In other words, when a sitti raises hell, duck. 5/5
