Bizarre move from the govt: FDI in digital media uploading/streaming is now 26%.

A few points follow:
1. This is not permission, it is a restriction. Digital media did not have limits earlier.

2. They're equating digital media with TV putting a limit equivalent of that of print. How does that make sense?
3. What happens to TV channels with 49% FDI who stream online? How will a different FDI limit apply differently to the same company? Will they have to stop streaming or TV?
4. What happens to news streams being accessed online? Will foreign channels accessed online be blocked?
5. Will FDI regulations will apply to those uploading content on YouTube or Facebook, or to the platforms (Facebook, YouTube) themselves?
6. The text mentions the word "uploaded". Does this mean that text based websites, where content is being uploaded, will also be impacted? What about sites that have raised more than 26% funding? Will they now have to buy back equity? Will global news sites be blocked in India?

So @medianama turns 11 today, and what a great day it is to start the first our annual conferences: PolicyNext, on the future of tech policy in India.

Aadhaar verdict tomorrow. I'm so nervous now.

Whatever the verdict, remember that there are many people who have been party to pushing back against this abomination.

#Rafale: Petitioner-advocate ML Sharma says all review petitions should be junked since nobody has brought on record the #CAG report on #RafaleDeal, saying the acquisition is economical and proved to be less costly.
#SupremeCourt declines to accept on record a letter given by the Hindu Editor N Ram to Prashant Bhushan regarding #Rafale.

Media that covers #Media #Publishing #Journalism #tech #SocialNetworks is often critical of traffic-driving algorithms, distribution of ad revenue, personal data collection/sale. Yet these writers have the ability to get users to force change. /1 notd.io/notes/56844813…
Most of the abuses that this sector of media is critical about come from internet giants, who pay lip service in response, because those abuses are very profitable, & regulation is unlikely in the US & users not motivated enough to change their usage of networks. /2
US regulation that would help stop the criticized practices is unlikely to help, mainly because Congress isn't qualified to design these regulations, so they would leave it to lobbyists working for the industry to be regulated /3

If May's goal on #Marr was to sell the #WhitePaper as 'Mansion House tweaked', it was not a successful outing to the BBC. The divergence from original Brexit promises has now been exposed completely.
First, a few points of clarity. May's claim that UK has to stick to "EU rulebook" to trade is simply not the case. "Mutual recognition" could allow for trade in goods to continue & give UK real autonomy (look out for new IEA research tomorrow: telegraph.co.uk/politics/2018/…) #Marr

Few points about the Moroccan/Saudi allegations of Hezbollah supporting the Polisario Front:

1. Polisario has entire training camps in neighboring Algeria, with experienced trainers who in fact trained Lebanese Resistance cadres in the 80s; they do not need Hezbollah trainers.
2. The Strela missile Morocco is accusing Hezbollah of training the Polisario on is a 50-year-old shoulder-fired Soviet missile that you could learn how to use on YouTube. The Polisario have been operating Strela missiles for at least 2 decades.
