John Minford, #SunTzu 9: 1 "In taking up position, and confronting the enemy:"

1) Cross Mountains
2) Cross Rivers
3) Cross Salt Marshes
4) Occupy Level Ground
Battle commences. I mentioned before that I found 16 verses previously missed. So, you'll see at the end of today's commentary that we'll have 229 verses completed, 209 to go. We're just past halfway on Master Sun's verse count. What's more, chapter 8 was incredible.
It's almost as if Master Sun is saying, alright, you have the theory, so now it's time to go get dirty. You need experience and the longer you wait before you get it, the more difficult it will be. Go DO SOMETHING! Go on. Shoe, shoe, shoe. Away with you now.
He might add, if he's in a kind mood, try not to die. Do come back. But, don't come back without victory or blood of some form. If you can win with no blood, bravo you. If you come back defeated, I'm going to need to see scars. In battle blood usually flows. But do come back.
I sneaked in the coming list a bit early, above, so you'd have the context. Those four actions, on four types of ground, take up the coming seven verses. So, we'll get to know them well. Let's go quickly over each right now, though.
Who remembers Maria, the impossibility of solving a problem like her, and the command, Climb Every Mountain? If you don't know that song, put it into YouTube and be ready to be moved. Enemy armies are often on the other side of a mountain range.
Nothing marks a border like a river. Crossing rivers is always risky, and never more so that with men, materiel, and a wagon train of supplies. You're vulnerable going in, getting through and coming out. Caesar's Rubicon was more stream than river, but what a moment it marked.
Salt Marshes are...the D.C. Swamp...literally. It's in the tidal basin of the Chesapeake Bay. Worse than rivers, salt marshes are nothing but danger at every turn. Yet, to get to the enemy and engage, you may well have to make your way through. Deadly ground, indeed.
Level ground is where we really duke it out. You occupy your part, the enemy theirs, and epic battles follow. There's always strategy to be put in place. Yet, at some point it will be push and shove, spears, arrows and swords, blood and gore on the level ground.
Listen to the great Lord Nelson on this chapter's topic: "When I am without orders and unexpected occurrences arrive I shall always act as I think the honour and glory of my King and Country demand.
"But in case signals can neither be seen or perfectly understood, no captain can do very wrong if he places his ship alongside that of the enemy."
So, let's talk about the march in front of us. In your community - and let's focus on the 435 districts of the House - there are guaranteed to be 3 groups of people. Each of the three is broken down twice more, for a total of six. I'll show you.
1) Democrats who vote
2) Democrats who may vote
3) Swing voters who vote
4) Swing voters who may vote
5) Republicans who vote
6) Republicans who may vote
Personally, tactically, I have no issue with groups 1 or 2. I have no desire to suppress the Democrat vote. However, I am very interested in recruiting members of group 2 into voting Republican, even if they'll never admit it to their friends. That's an interesting challenge.
Perhaps surprisingly, I'm equally interestED in groups 3 & 4. I might almost be more interesting in 4 than 3. I love moving new voters to vote for the first time. How wonderful is that? But in either case, it is one us to win every House Seat we can, and 3 & 4 count, HUGELY.
Group 5 has, for me, but one question: WILL YOU LEAD? Or, will you STEP UP and lead? I'll come back to that. Group 6 may actually be the truest of the swing vote. That is, if all Republicans who may vote do, then we'll win in the biggest landslide ever. How do we inspire them?
That's the actual question of leadership. Can group 5 take responsibility to work closely with group 6 so as to ensure that as many vote as possible? It may well be that groups 5 & 6 are the real field of contest. 5 to lead, 6 to follow, both to come together.
Let's reduce leadership down to its smallest unit, again. You decide to lead. You find someone to help you. You select a mission - read Lord Nelson again - and decide to engage. Get to it! Just two people is enough to get started.
It will take all our skill to keep pace with Master Sun's tactics and guidance in this chapter. And, it will take getting some real experience. It is time now, my friends, to get started.
