I am so confused about the Christian “social media bubble.” Someone makes a public statement for the whole world to see. They affirm, clap, and interact with those that agree with them. They continue with their public statements on social media.
However, when someone wants to tell them that their statement(s) aren’t biblical but harmful to the body & are in full error against God’s word, that needs to be done alone?😟😮🤔
Folks want them to be addressed behind the scenes. Folks want them to be pulled aside and talked to in private. Although, their initial statement was for the world to see, they want their errors to be discussed behind closed doors. I hope those on social media
are aware of this: most of the Christian influencers and folks y’all see online don’t really come to each other’s houses for Sunday potluck. They aren’t neighbors on the same block. This world is as big for them as it is for us. They don’t have
a Christian leader phone book where they can just look someone up and address something they’ve said or done in error. And with the world watching and sometimes affirming they need to know why that statement(s) was in error as well.
Scriptures show Jesus offering public rebuke often. So why should the rules of social media be different? But, I will also say that there is a way to rebuke without the use of demeaning and hateful language. I’ve seen so called public rebukes that were
nothing more than an opportunity to beat someone else down behind a computer screen. I’m all for calling something what it is, but speaking with a dagger for a tongue does nothing for the one you’re speaking to. No one would take that, turn around & say,
“Wow, the way that person talked down to me & called me names was life changing. Let me repent.” No! That’s not how it goes. You just become the angry overly religious nut who’s trying to bully people online. Stop it!
Finally, a public statement that you offer up for the world to see, that you posted aware of the public judgement, scrutiny, or affirmations that would follow should be handled publicly. It’s public, this is social media, folks ain’t always gonna agree.
So can we please stop telling folks they need to rebuke offline when they themselves are publicly affirming them? Okay I’m done for now.
