Fitting, for multiple reasons, that I wandered into the Aljube museum

1/
For much of the 20th Century, Portugal was under an authoritarian regime, making extensive use of surveillance and violence to maintain control

2/
The Aljube was used to house many political prisoners, with guards drawing on techniques taught them by the CIA (and others)

3/
The museum is a really good insight into how such a system worked, its penetration of society and interpersonal relations, and its fall

4/
And fall it did, because of the willingness of people to struggle against their oppression and to work for a better, more democratic life

5/
I'll leave you to your thoughts on this, while I try to do a Portuguese elevenses
