I know a few people who owned this 3 geared Mahindra. I think the engine was CJ 500 D. There were some variants with FRP bodies (5 door) and these FRP kits had a big “R” on its tailgate as the company which made the FRP bodies was Roplas. Changing gears was a bicep workout
This model continued with modifications many years later and was rebadged as “Major”. Was a huge improvement over Mahindra CJ500D. Don’t know if it was changed to 4 geared but had the monicker ‘Major’ right under the windshield. It had rectangular side indicators
MM540 was the model of Mahindra which was the Jeep Wrangler of Mahindra users. For the first time there were major changes. It even had a press advertisement with a headline ‘Would you allow your daughter to marry a man who drives a Jeep?” This was actually the grandpa of ‘Thar’
Based on the MM540 there was the Mahindra commander; soft top and hard top. This took the famous Henry Ford quote “you can have Ford in any colour so long as it’s black” to a new level. All early models were available in only in blue. Seldom you came across any other colour.
Mahindra Armada. This was the 1st Mahindra which turned heads even for non Jeep lovers. I think this was the 1st Mahindra which had rectangular headlamps. It had bright decals and the paint was much better. This was much like the Dilip Chabria customisation
Mahindra Bolero. Mahindra actually shifted the game with this model. Enjoyed driving this model. Paint quality had radically improved and the sound deadening material was top class by Mahindra standards. This was the Mahindra which was ‘car like’ to drive.
Mahindra Classic 4X4 was a niche model which had those ugly shiny wheels. Could not find a pic with those wheels. Was available mostly in red. Mahindra had those press ads with ‘topless’ tags. ( The mag wheels in the 1st pic aren’t the ones which the earlier models had)
Mahindra Scorpio. I always liked it’s first design. The fan grille which gave way to the new grille which became a Mahindra trademark. The headlights on the new models look better now. The mock Christmas tree tail lights were an eyesore. Reverse mud flaps on front bumper: Ugly
Mahindra Xylo. The trend that started with Bolero where all Mahindra vehicles model names ended with letter ‘O’ continued with Xylo. Ugly looking MPV with a fan grille which Mahindra rightly replaced with a better looking grille and a chrome lip in the facelifts.
Mahindra Quanto was sub 4 metre SUV which looked as ugly as the earlier Xylo. Looked much better after it went under the knife and it was rebadged as ‘Nuvosport’. (Second pic)
Mahindra XUV 500. Going with the company policy of naming it’s models ending with letter ‘O’, it was pronounced as Five zero ‘0’ & not 500. The film ‘Attacks of 26/11’ wrongly showed XUV 500 parked outside Leopold Cafe, Mumbai. Movie was set in 2008 & XUV 500 was launched in 2011
