"It turned out this governing lark is tough, and that bringing in a divisive chap as my chief adviser caused divisions, mostly in my own party. The remainers are to blame really, the ones that voted for Brexit, not those that didn't in my Cabinet, vote for me in an election"
"As for those who want us to stop no-deal, that's stopping me from threatening no-deal to get no-deal, or perhaps to get a deal, we have some splendid proposals to send to Brussels this week, or perhaps next week, or never... vote for me in an election..."
Will be amusing if there's no mention of deselections, elections, or confidence votes... almost like someone just worked out the last few days made everything worse for the Government...
So Johnson goes back to the May tradition. Statements of progress, talks about Parliamentary scrutiny, talks about a deal at the European Council, talks about needing to show we're ready for no deal, no detail, but walking back from wild threats.
Problem Johnson faces is there is absolutely no evidence from the EU that there are any meaningful talks, no evidence no-deal threats work, and no reason to believe the European Council is the venue at which a deal will be cut (that's usually for internal EU matters).
Teeing up for an election announcement if he loses the vote against no-deal? Impossible to tell. He may hope to win the vote in favour of no-deal still (could be tight), or another possibility is accept defeat and have an election in November - give me a majority to finish Brexit
