Yesterday's expulsions of Conservative MPs should bring home to us the scale of the political crisis we face in the UK. This will continue until a new consensus on our EU relationship is established - taking a step back with some thoughts here linkedin.com/pulse/untangli…
The core problem of Brexit isn't the backstop. It is that buffeted by the conflicting forces of globalisation and nationalism we have no clear sense of what our relationship should be with Europe, or that any agreement will come with a cost.
We have been dragged into zero sum politics, where we face the prospect of successive governments totally reversing the previous administration's EU policy, with resulting total investment uncertainty. That's not sustainable - therefore no deal is not sustainable
The realistic debate on our relationship started in the referendum campaign - and then ended as soon as the result was announced, and successive Prime Ministers starting suggesting we could have exactly what we wanted at no cost. This continues.
At any time we can choose to step back into the real world of choices with consequences for our EU relationship. While our debate is dominated by votes, or no-deal v referendum, this cannot happen. And that damages our economy.
TL:DR I wrote a quick article on the mess we're in. Read it. Might not make you feel better that we're on the right track now, or may give you hope that this is far from intractable. linkedin.com/pulse/untangli…
cc the serious academic types who will probably find this all too glib and simplified like @anandMenon1 @GoodwinMJ @Usherwood @BrigidLaffan @LawDavF @jdportes @hayward_katy @robfordmancs
