Former SecDef Jim Mattis, speaking in DC, says while he had major concerns about modernization when he came in, "I left with almost no concerns about the trajectory we were on." Cites 5G, hypersonics as key areas.
Mattis says he met Rex Tillerson for the first time in late December 2016 when in DC. Mattis told him "I want the diplomats in charge of foreign policy.... he just reached over that table with that big hand of his and we shook hands." Adds they had weekly breakfasts.
This was an interesting exchange.
Mattis getting a nice softball inquiring into whether he'd look to enter politics. Mattis says "I try to keep the rocky mountains between me and Washington DC." Says he wants younger generation to take greater leadership in politics.
Mattis: "I believe the international conventions, the international community, the organizations that tie us together, we should engage more in them. I believe in engaging with the world more and intervening militarily, at least with large forces, less."
Mattis asked about women as part of Marine rifle platoons. He seems... less than enthusiastic. Talks about having "young people falling in love in your unit," hints it could cost units. He's stopping just short of stating it, however.
"My world's note fair.... I'm not against the issue, intrinsically, but we had better not just say 'here sergeant, you figure it out, its your problem.' No no. It's society's problem."
"You're going to put young men and women, when you find they are very fond of each other, and respect for their sexuality should be part of that" decision, Mattis says.
Interesting story Mattis is telling about a conversation he had with a top Chinese official. Short version: he believes there is a way both nations can work it out, but it won't be easy.
Mattis: "We can no longer be deluded by our own desires. We are going to have to accept China for what it is." Says the Hong Kong situation is proof of an "authoritarian" point of view.
