In the past 24 hours, two media outlets have reported that Prime Minister @JustinTrudeau will only participate in the two election debates organized by the government’s Debates Commission, according to unnamed Liberal strategists.
If true, this is unacceptable and should prompt every Canadian to ask what kind of democracy we want.
Do we want a democracy where our leaders get to mostly skate through elections giving prepared speeches, scripted media interviews and posing for photo ops?
Or, do we want to see them pressure tested in multiple election debates where they have to think on their feet and confront their political opponents head-on?
This call for a debate is about more than foreign policy and the global issues confronting Canada. It is about holding our leaders to account. It is about ensuring Canadians can make an informed choice on Oct 21, It’s about the democracy we want.
We sincerely hope @JustinTrudeau will listen to over 12,000 citizens across the country who have joined our campaign asking the PM to take part in the #munkdebate on foreign policy.
Pls @JustinTrudeau join @AndrewScheer @ElizabethMay @theJagmeetSingh and make this debate happen. Let’s not have an empty chair on the stage of Roy Thomson Hall on October 1.
