Hi just a friendly reminder that "objectivity" is a white myth™ that erases histories of colonialism from whiteness making it seem like white people are somehow better equipped to talk about your people & culture than you are, because you're "too close" to the subject matter.
Spoke today at a local college & was called "too subjective", which I hear a lot. Yet, if I said the same things as a white person I wouldn't have been questioned. Like white people have nothing to gain from a growing body of reductive research that continues to orientalize us!
Much of academia (esp in fields of anthro, history, science, etc where "objectivity" claims are paramount) has roots in accelerating/maintaining white supremacy/imperialism. Ya'll really only just as "objective" as Columbus or Vasco da Gama--the original western anthropologists.
For everyone asking in the DMs rn: Personally, I think the "responsible" thing to do is not pretend you're objective, but to openly acknowledge where your subjectivities are rooted, and why. This includes professors teaching courses in colleges, students doing research, etc.
