After years of being a champion of the prosperity message, and asking people to give thousands of dollars to the Lord in seed offerings and amassing a net worth between $40m - $60m, Benny Hinn has had a change of heart and recanted the prosperity message.
"I'm sorry to say that prosperity has gone a little crazy. And I'm correcting my own theology. I think it is an offence to the Lord to say give $1,000. I think it is an offence on the Holy Spirit to place a price on the Gospel. I am done with it" - Benny Hinn
"I will never again ask you to give a $1,000 or whatever amount because I think the Holy Ghost is just fed up with it. If I hear one more time 'break the back of debt with $1,000', I will rebuke them. I think that's buying the Gospel and buying the blessing". Benny Hinn
"That is greed in the Holy Spirit. If you are not giving because you love Jesus Christ, don't bother giving. Giving has become such a gimmick it's making me sick to the stomach. I think it's time we say it as it is - The Gospel is not for sale, the blessing is not for sale....

If you are as old as I am and you gave your life to Christ in the 80s, you need to pause for a sec and reflect on his words because chances are that your Christian faith today and a lot of what you had as your foundation was influenced by Benny Hinn messages.
I do not know whether to thank him for having the courage to recant and say he was wrong for pushing a theology he now knows was scamming people using the Holy Spirit. Or I should be angry with him for pushing a theology that has disconnected the church from its main purpose.
What I do know is this. Men (or women of God) are human. They can get it wrong. Yes even something as critical as a theology. It's not for you to swallow everything they say hook, line and sinker. It's for you to search it out and see if it is true. Selah
