It has been a pleasure to discuss with delegates our poster P2.01-49 today at #WCLC2019. Let me summarize some of the most important points (take home messages): #oncoalert
Patients with brain metastasis of NSCLC treated with brain radiotherapy and systemic treatment (n=64) that take silibinin supplementation (n=15) present significal benefit in our retrospective study: mOS=6.3 months vs 28.5 months, p=0.000052. This is Kaplan Meier survival curve👇
Probably you are initially incredulous of this really promising results. The biological explanation has been elegantly reported in the 2018 work lead by @valientelab: silibinin inhibits pSTAT3 reactive astrocytes, required for brain metastasis survival. nature.com/articles/s4159…
For more details regarding the molecular mechanism detailing how silibinin can inhibit pSTAT3 you should read our manuscript lead by @metabostemness: doi.org/10.1016/j.fct.…
Finally, not all formulations of silibinin are created equal. Another interesting work of our group lead by @metabostemness show how the formulation of silibinin that we have used can be absorved and can cross the blood brain barrier more efficiently: mdpi.com/1422-0067/20/7…
I hope you have enjoyed our academic cancer research trip of several years in few tweets. Thank you to our patients, collaborators and sponsors. All together can find new ways to fight brain cancer metastasis. For more information I recommend these previous works on the field:
