En route to Grand Bahama with volunteers and about 600 pounds worth of food and supplies for #Dorian survivors. They’ve been making two trips a day.
Biggest needs:
Generators
Medical supplies
Water
Baby supplies
Female hygiene products
Water
City of Melbourne has been donating all these goods. John Casey has been here every day for about a week helping out
Just a few people who’ve been part of a massive volunteer operation across Florida, the US, and other countries to get basic necessities over to the Bahamas buzzfeednews.com/article/briann…
📸 from Grand Bahama, which is still trying to recover from Hurricane Matthew. Sergio Nativi, executive director of Old Bahama Bay resort, said maybe 30% of this Island has come back from that 206 storm and now they’re reeling
Vida Hepburn has been making hot meals and helping get supplies to distraught areas like Freeport and High Rock.

“I don’t know how much more we can take,” he says about living through 2 major storms in 4 years. “People are hurting for a bottle of water”
Later, Vida watched a clip going around his Facebook of Trump disparaging #Dorian survivors and calling them “bad gang members” and “bad drug dealers"

“He’s an idiot,” he said after. “But we just went through a Cat-5, he can’t bother me”
Also Vida’s dog, China, is very good and lives for foot-belly-rubs
About 100 people here at the Freeport airport trying to get off the island on charity or volunteer flights, but say they can’t leave on any vessels (boats+planes) because they don’t have a US visa, even though many have passports and police records, which they say should suffice
Avery Pinder, 28, has been trying to get off island for days, showing up at the airport at 4 am and waiting for a free ride but says she doesn’t have a US visa, she says it’s hard to score a ride. They’ve been sleeping in a car with her daughter and boyfriend for the past 6 days
She doesn’t know where to get a visa. Her young nieces were pulled off a ship+separated from their grandpa bc they didn’t have 1

“[The US]thinks we’re coming to stay but we’re just trying to catch ourselves.I lost family members but you can’t grieve bc there’s too much going on”
People hoping to get a spot on a free/private plane
Florence Cooper, 55, doesn’t want her grand kids to go to Florida w/out her, even though they’re US citizens. She has a passport and police record and had hoped that’d be enough. Luckily, they flagged down Tampa General Hospital volunteers, and after 4 hours today, scored a ride
