I’m more baffled how they managed to do historical tours & not talk a lot about it. How would you even avoid it without sounding ridiculous?
Ah. Apparently, yes, they just used a lot of gross euphemisms that do, indeed sound ridiculous.
It does say something about the level of our collective denial that people could visit places whose primary function was the exploitation of enslaved labor and not expect to hear much about slavery — and until the past decade or so have been correct in that expectation.
Come to think of it, I recall visiting Monticello as a child and hearing slavery referenced only in passing. I went back maybe 5-6 years ago and it was a much bigger part of the tour.
