So the teenage girl in Anchorage who was disqualified after winning a swim meet on Friday, because her swimsuit ran up in the back - or as the referee so specifically put it, they could see "butt cheek touching butt cheek?” Well it turns out she is Black. washingtonpost.com/nation/2019/09…
The teenager is a top-ranked swimmer who is likely to go on to compete at a collegiate level.
Last year, a parent took a photo of the teenager's backside and shared it with other parents, supposedly to demonstrate that the swimwear was inappropriate.
The teenager has also been accused of hiking her suit up on purpose.
The racism, the misogynoir. Just the terrifying thought of what this abuse could do to a teenage girl whose body, especially as an athlete, was already being policed. The media coverage usually so unhelpful might here be positive so she and her family know how supported they are.
