@NCHouseSpeaker just stated in session that today’s Redistricting Committee Meeting (which was supposed to start at 9 am) is the only opportunity for in person public comment on the final NC House maps. However, the maps have not been posted yet & no one knew this until now. 🤷‍♀️
@RepDavidRLewis states 2 minutes per Speaker & new maps are just now being distributed. As you can see, not many members of the public are here.
@CommonCauseNC @LWVofWake @LWVNCarolina @democracync
The hearing is starting and no one has signed up. #ncpol
For those that weren’t able to get to Raleigh with 30 minutes notice, this map is being discussed now. Rep. Sarah Stevens (R) has introduced an amendment to create this county grouping. #ncpol @CommonCauseNC
This amendment passed on party lines (with the exception of Rep. Brockman (D) voting yes). #ncpol
@RepDavidRLewis has opened public comment. Not one person has signed up to speak. We are at ease while we wait “for anyone who wants to speak to collect their thoughts.” It’s hard to collect your thoughts when you’ve been given the materials just minutes before. #ncpol
Jane Pinsky speaking now. She has TWO MINUTES to speak on the maps. Two minutes. “I’m deeply concerned... this is not true public comment. It was not noticed & people could not get here.” #ncpol @CommonCauseNC @LWVNCarolina
@RepDavidRLewis suggests that he told Ms. Pinsky last night at 9:15 pm that there would be opportunity for public comment. She agreed but “I feel challenged to be the voice for 10 million North Carolinians who need to have their voices heard.” Telling one person is not notice.
@lekhashupeck from @RedistrictFdn speaks and criticizes “public comment.”
The FOUR MINUTE public comment period is now over. “If you live in Wilmington or Asheville, areas that are affected, there is no way you could have made it here for public comment.” - @DebButlerHD18 #ncpol
Rep. Brenden Jones (R) says we should bring in a camel because this a “circus” and that we need to “wrap this up” since the public has known about this via the radio, TV, Internet. I think clowns would be a better idea. 🤦‍♀️ 🐪 🎪 🤡 #ncpol
For everyone who wasn’t able to get to the #ncga with 30 minutes notice, you can still submit written public comment here: ncleg.gov/RequestForComm…

View the live stream of the Redistricting Committee “circus” here 🎪😉: ncleg.gov/Video/MultiStr…. We are at ease now while discussion is happening regarding the Cumberland County area. 🤷‍♀️ An amendment may be filed by Rep. Floyd. #ncpol
This is the proposed NC House map (not including amendments that have been discussed this morning). #ncpol
Rep. Floyd amendment of Cumberland County districts. #ncpol
The Floyd amendment fails. #ncpol
I have to leave the hearing, but please stay tuned to the live stream for the ongoing saga of redistricting in North Carolina! 😱ncleg.gov/Video/MultiStr…
The NC House is set to return to session at 1:30. You can follow the audio stream here: ncleg.gov/Audio/house #ncpol
Will the NC House allow a proper in-person public comment or a public hearing now that we have an extra day? There is absolutely no reason not to give the public time to review the maps passed out of the committee. Tune in at 2 pm when we go back into session to find out. #ncpol

@RepDavidRLewis announces public comment will be taken on the House maps Monday at 12 pm, even though the House is voting on the maps today. “We probably didn’t advertise public comment as well as we should have.” You think? 🤔 #ncpol #ncga @CommonCauseNC @LWVNCarolina
The public hearing will be held at 12 pm in Room 643 of the Legislative Office Building, jointly with the Senate Redistricting Committee. @GrierMartin now expressing concern with what information has been provided to public so far. #ncpol
HB1020 map that we are voting on today. #ncpol
Public comment submitted via online portal has expressed concerned about no public hearings across the state, the use of Dr. Chen’s maps, consideration of incumbency & the difficulty of accessing maps & hearing clear audio during the hearings. #ncpol

HB1020, the map redraw bill, just passed second reading on partisan lines, 60-52. Third reading still to come. #ncpol
Now the Republicans made a motion to split the bill into two sections (the 13 county groupings and then the Columbus-Pender-Robeson grouping by itself)- both sections passed (mostly along partisan lines). HB1020 now goes to the Senate. #ncpol
