Journalism is dying and we can heal it

By overturning New York Times v. Sullivan
NYT v. Sullivan gives journalists a license to defame

It's built on the presumption that journalists act in good faith to reveal the truth about the world

But that's a faulty presumption

They don't deserve any special protection

Open up the libel laws
"What about free speech?"

For the right, freedom of speech is the freedom to offend

For the left, freedom of speech is the freedom to defame

It's unclear why the latter deserves protection

Especially given that no such freedom was recognized for nearly 200 years post-founding
No

Simple negligence

No more excuses about the fact that journalists weren't *intentionally* lying when they defamed someone

The way to make journalists care about the truth is to impose damages on them for negligently publishing falsehoods
