I was doing some reflection today. Many have asked if this is taking a toll on me. It is. It’s difficult knowing what malevolent people there are in the world and that I mean no more to them than a bug on a windshield. An insignificant nuisance.
But I have a method to keep me sane and hopeful. I’ve had plenty of support from fellow progressives in DM’s, but I also use music to calm my inner angst. I have my favourites. They are the songs that remind me of what I believe, cherish and value.
One is my favourite lately. It resonates with me and provides inspiration every time I listen to it. Which is often.

Just like the millions that marched for climate action today. Inspiration is everywhere.

We can dwell on the negative or focus on what brings us together.
I wonder if the people who marched today believe things are getting better. Or if they feel things are the same after the global march.

Some lay blame on governments, the fossil fuel industry, dictators, the wealthy. Some find it easier to cope with an enemy identified.
Leaders who disappoint us. Neighbours who remain unconvinced of climate change. They act like they have no concern or compassion for others. I wonder if those people have ever experienced love and acceptance. They act like they want everyone else to be unloved, under valued.
It’s as if the people of the world demanding climate action disappoint and annoy those wanting to continue using fossil fuels. And they certainly leave a bad taste in the mouth.

It’s too late to point fingers and rehash who’s responsible. All we can do is move forward now.
What keeps me focussed is my belief in one Canada and one world. We are all on the same ship and we need to work together to keep it afloat. We need to remember each other’s humanity. Every one of us is dependent on every other for survival of our species & our children’s future.
It helps to remember everyone, even the ones we don’t agree with are dependent on us, and we them. Each life is one component of the only living organism we know of in our solar system, earth.
With all the strife in the world, the escalating climate changes and fear of the future, I wonder if those marching for change today can forgive those who caused this situation. Or would they divide us further by moralizing and condemning those who are repentant and contrite.
Every human being makes mistakes. What will bringing up past decisions do but create more rifts and division when unity and interdependence are required for our collective survival.

It’s not like we’re expecting too much. We’ve been asking for decades.
We all have our own priorities, but survival is our common cause. We must depend on one another and support one another. Stop hurting each other and work together. The only way to do that is to meet in the middle.

Many are afraid. Fear leads to judgement, condemnation, scorn.
We ask for climate action, but then we condemn the action as too small and demand more concessions, refusing ourselves to negotiate one inch, expecting those resisting change to make all the concessions. That’s not how democracy works, that’s actually autocracy. Dictatorship.
When all there is between us is hurt and an unconquerable divide, we resign ourselves to a certain fate. I hope the people marching remember that. Cooperation and concessions to meet disparate needs is required, not indignant scorn, punishment for fault & demands.
That’s what gets me through every day. I know we can do this, but we can only do this together. We need to move quickly, we need to be purposeful and do what we must to give our children a future. Every human being is our brother or sister in this journey.
No life is less worthy than our own. We are one global community, but we are not the same. We need to put our differences aside and work together, help each other, stop the judgement and cynicism and come together to save our worst enemy.
Everything I wrote is inspired by one song that I listen to daily. It’s my mantra, my inspiration and my goal. All in one.
This is the song.

One Canada, One world, one life to live.

Everyday that keeps me going.
